Huang Gongwang

Yuan dynasty (1271-1368)

Huang Gongwang (黄公望 in Chinese, 1269—1354) a native of Changshu (now in Jiangsu province). In his early years, he served as a clerk in the Censorate in Dadu (present-day Beijing) but faced imprisonment. Later, he withdrew to the southern regions of Suzhou and the Fuchun Mountains, affiliating with the Daoist Quanzhen school.

 

Specializing in landscape painting, he embraced the 'simple and naive' style from the Five Dynasties artists Dong Yuan and Juran; At the same time, he incorporated the idea of ’ the ancient spirit‘ of painter Zhao Mengfu, he is the leading figure of the 'Four Masters of Yuan Dynasty'.
