Dong Yuan (董源 in Chinese, c.932 - c.962) was a painting master of the Five Dynasties period. He is regarded as the pioneering figure in Southern (Jiangnan) School landscape painting and, along with Li Cheng and Fan Kuan, is collectively known as the 'Three Masters of the Northern Song.'
His landscape paintings showcased the scenery around the lower Yangtze River near Nanjing, characterized by gently rolling mountains alongside misty waterways. This depiction starkly contrasted with the Northern School, which portrayed the sharp and massive mountains of the northern regions.
